Meet Karen, Vintage Cake Fairy – Wedding Cake Designer, Pisces & Hopeless Romantic

Meet Karen, Vintage Cake Fairy–

a down-to-earth romantic with a soft spot for vintage treasures and a very serious love of cake

Hello and welcome — I’m Karen, also known as the Vintage Cake Fairy, and this is my very first blog post. If you’re looking for a wedding cake designer who loves vintage details, alternative styling, and cakes with real personality, you’re very much in the right place.

I design wedding cakes that feel nostalgic, elegant, and just a little bit unconventional. My style is guided by clean shapes, subtle details, and a design-led approach, creating cakes that feel timeless rather than trend-led. Each cake is created to feel personal and intentional, thoughtfully designed to complement the atmosphere and aesthetic of your wedding day.

I’m also a Pisces and a complete hopeless romantic, which probably explains why I love weddings as much as I do. There’s something incredibly special about being part of such a meaningful moment — from the planning stages right through to seeing everything come together on the day. Making wedding cakes allows me to combine creativity, emotion, and storytelling, and I genuinely adore being involved in that process with my couples.

Before cakes became my full-time focus, I worked backstage in London’s West End, where creativity, pressure, and problem-solving were part of everyday life. That experience taught me how to stay calm, organised, and adaptable — skills that translate surprisingly well to the world of bespoke wedding cakes.

I also hold a degree in Product and Furniture Design, which heavily influences how I approach cake design. I think about structure, balance, proportion, and form just as much as decoration. To me, wedding cakes are edible design pieces — carefully considered, well-built, and made to be admired (and eaten).

I previously lived in Newcastle upon Tyne, where I ran the Great North Run (yes, really — and yes, I’m still impressed with past-me). That mix of determination, creativity, and northern grit has followed me into my business and continues to shape how I work today.

Outside of designing bespoke wedding cakes, I have an ongoing love affair with vintage homeware, especially pieces with character, history, and a slightly wonky charm. I’m endlessly inspired by interiors, colour palettes, and objects from the past. I also love fantasy films, particularly classics like The Lord of the Rings, which feels very on-brand for someone called the Vintage Cake Fairy.

This blog will be a place where I share:

  • insight into my wedding cake design process

  • inspiration behind my vintage and alternative wedding cakes

  • helpful planning advice for couples

  • behind-the-scenes moments from life as a wedding cake designer

Everything here will be relaxed, honest, and useful — with a little wit along the way.

If you’re currently planning your wedding and would like to talk about your cake, you’re very welcome to get in touch to check availability or start the conversation.
You can also follow along for future posts, inspiration, and behind-the-scenes glimpses as this space continues to grow.

Thank you so much for being here at the very beginning.
I can’t wait to share more.
